Een rickshaw wordt toch door ‘n mannetje voortgetrokken?
Not anymore! This is the 21st century! Maak kennis met de moderne Rickshaw, oftewel de TukTuk.
 Maar die heeft maar 3 wielen?
Tja... maar 3 wielen, maar één tweetaktmotor, maar 145.45 cc en maar 277 kg. Kortom, een TukTuk is een voertuig speciaal ontworpen voor de korte ritjes in de stad, niet voor 3000 kilometer dwars door India en Nepal.
Hoe kom je aan die TukTuk?
The Adventurist regelt er een voor je en voordat de rally begint heb je een dag of twee om de TukTuk nog wat op te pimpen ('n spoiler? 'n geluidsinstallatie? 'n claxon?)
Hoe hard rijdt een TukTuk?
51 km/uur ... en niet harder, zeker niet zachter
Is dat niet gevaarlijk?
Op zich niet, ware het niet dat 1.3 miljard Indianen zich ook elke dag op de weg begeven... en die geloven allemaal wel in reïncarnatie...
En waarom heet het dan eigelijk een Rickshaw Run?
Omdat er wel degenlijk sprake is van een competitie: je bepaalt zelf hoeveel uur je per dag gaat rijden (gemiddeld wel zo’n 10 uur per dag), waar je slaapt, waar je eet etc. Het doel is om als eerste in Pokhara aan te komen, dan is de spreekwoordelijke en alom bekende eeuwige roem voor ons!
Maar dan zie je toch niks van het land?
Precies, daarom is niet iedereen even fanatiek en wordt er zeker tijd uitgetrokken voor sightseeing! Maar vanuit een rijdende TukTuk kan je ook prima plaatjes schieten voor thuis...
Waarom überhaupt deelnemen en niet gewoon lekker naar de Costa del Sol?!
Je bent vrijgezel en hebt dus wel wat tijd over? Op zoek naar een beetje avontuur? Of je wilde altijd al een keer naar India en met typisch Indiaas eigen vervoer is het dan wel het mooist... Of zijn de twee goede doelen die we ermee steunen ook nog een uitdaging?
Goede doelen? Jullie eigen portemonnee zeker?
Ja dat mag natuurlijk altijd... nee, nee: een voorwaarde om mee te doen is het ophalen van minimaal 2 maal 500 UK pond voor twee zeer goeie goede doelen:

English summary Welcome to the GroenGele Reigers’ “Rickshaw Run Autumn Edition 2009” website. The Rickshaw run is organised by “The Adventurist” travel agency and is a rally starting in Goa (India) to Pokhara (Nepal) with a Rickshaw.
A Rickshaw, or a TukTuk, is a vehicle with only three wheels, only one two-stroke engine, only 145.45 cc, it only weighs 270 kg and it drives 51 km/hour, the max! In brief, a TukTuk is a vehicle specially designed for the short trips within a city instead of a 3000 km long trip passing India and a part of Nepal. The Adventurist arranges one for us and before we start the rally every team (61 in total) has one or two days to “pimp” the TukTuk (for instance a spoiler? Stereo set? Bore out the cylinders?)
Dangerous you think? Not really, when you drive on your own, but… Of course 1.3 billion Indians are driving the roads as well and they… Do believe in reincarnation. By the way, it is called a “rally” because there is definitely a competition going on: we decide daily how many hours we drive the TukTuk and our goal is to finish in Pokhara as the number one … Then the proverbially and generally eternal glory is ours! Taking pictures and shooting movies should be performed from the driving TukTuk… but of course, there is enough time for site seeing and a couple of beers… come on, it is still holidays!
Participating in the Rickshaw Run 2009 means also that all registered teams collect money for charities: the goal for every team is to collect at least 2 times 500 UK pound for two different very important charities. Please help us to achieve our goal and donate!
The Rickshaw Run Autumn Edition starts on 12 September 2009 and finishes 25 September 2009, which, indeed, corresponds with just 2 weeks…
We are the GroenGele Reigers, which means the “GreenYellow Herons”. We are green and yellow, because these colours belong to The Hague (the Netherlands) where we both live and we are the Reigers, because this nice creature returns in the city’s arms all the time… Or maybe it is a stork…?!? Anyway, it is difficult for native English speaking participants to pronounce the word “Reigers” and only that's nice already!
The team consists of Diederick Bouwmeester (33) en Pim van Vuuren (47), good mates who met in one of the pubs in The Hague, went on holidays in France, learned kite surfing in Greece and of course were seen at a lot of parties and dancing festivals….
